to design a spirometer conveying cohesive visual language

personal project

Spirometry is a test used to help diagnose and measure certain lung conditions by measuring how much air you can breath out in one forced breath. Most existing spirometers look functional and outdated, lacking emotional stimuli.

Airpen is a combination of the words ‘air’ and ‘pen’. Air articulates the functionality of a spirometer and the word pen represents the shape of a penguin. The logo is designed to be playful, friendly and contemporary conveying a lifestyle-led aesthetic. A balance between the use of neutral and coral coloured highlights helps to retain a medical style. A rounded typeface in parallel with a geometric construction enhances a better and more empathic user experience.

a seamless aesthetic

Airpen is the redesign of an existing spirometer to help encourage healthcare professionals to emotionally engage with their medical devices. The overall visual language aesthetic is inspired by a penguin. The disposable mouthpiece and large durable body of a spirometer connected well with shape of a penguin’s large beak and body structure. With inspiration from lifestyle consumer electronics, the design leads a minimal driven aesthetic, building an emotive connection between healthcare professionals and patients
