to design a spirometer conveying cohesive visual language

personal project

Spirometry is a test used to help diagnose and measure certain lung conditions by measuring how much air you can breath out in one forced breath. Most existing spirometers look functional and outdated, lacking emotional stimuli.

To challenge the conventional medical aesthetic, An Antarctic visual language theme was selected. This direction was driven by a relation to airflow and breeze, similar to the functionality of a spirometer. Exploring this theme discovered many design attributes which were translated into the final design direction.

The logo name is a combination of the words ‘air’ and ‘pen’. Air articulates the functionality of a spirometer and the word pen represents the shape of a penguin. The logo is predominantly monotone and uses coloured highlights to retain a playful and contemporary design.

a seamless aesthetic

Airpen is the redesign of an existing spirometer which demonstrates cohesive visual language applied across all physical, digital and print touchpoints. This application is demonstrated through form, colour, material and finish. One example of this is the subtle coloured highlight which communicates to the user key information such as exhalation feedback. With inspiration from lifestyle-led consumer electronics, the design delivers a playful yet minimal driven aesthetic, building an emotive connection between healthcare professionals and patients.
